The inaugural National Thali Week (NTW) has launched this week to mark the beginning of an annual celebration dedicated to South Asia's vibrant culinary heritage.
The week-long celebration hopes to applaud South Asia's vibrant culinary heritage, inviting enthusiasts to explore the rich diversity of cuisines showcased in a traditional thali. Scheduled to held each year during January, NTW encourages cultural appreciation, healthy eating habits, and community spirit, making it a unique event that resonates with people across the globe.
The event was announced towards the tail end of 2024 at Leicester's Mohanthal Restaurants, which also saw the MasterChef 2019 semi-finalist, Chef Arbinder Singh, endorsing the initiative.
The thali, a traditional platter that offers a variety of dishes, symbolises the unity and diversity of South Asian cuisine. By delving into the flavours and traditions represented in each dish, participants are encouraged to embrace the cultural stories and distinct tastes of different regions. Beyond its culinary appeal, NTW also promotes a balanced and plant-based approach to eating, highlighting the health benefits of vegetarian meals, particularly after the indulgent holiday season.

Community engagement is another key aspect of NTW. The initiative inspires individuals and groups to host fundraising events, with proceeds supporting local charities.
The visionary behind NTW is Romail Gulzar, a distinguished journalist and entrepreneur whose passion for food and South Asian culinary traditions has driven numerous successful initiatives. Gulzar’s journey into the culinary world began with the Leicestershire Curry Awards, an event celebrating the artistry of South Asian cuisine while uniting chefs, restaurateurs, and food lovers. This success paved the way for the Toronto Curry Awards, further expanding the global appreciation of South Asian flavours.
Building on these achievements, Gulzar introduced National Samosa Week, a celebration of the beloved triangular pastry that embodies cultural fusion and culinary joy. This event has become a platform for people to explore the diverse fillings and regional variations of samosas, fostering a sense of community and shared happiness.
Gulzar’s influence extends further with the creation of England Curry Capital, a title recognising cities with exceptional curry offerings and dynamic food cultures. This initiative has bolstered local economies and highlighted the integral role of curry in British cuisine.
