The campaign for ‘Laapataa Ladies’ (Lost Ladies), India’s official entry for the 2025 Oscars, began on a high note with a series of screenings and events in London this week.

Bollywood star Aamir Khan, the producer of the film, joined director Kiran Rao and fellow producer Jyoti Deshpande of Jio Studios as they hit the cinematic trail to create a buzz around the heart-warming slice-of-life drama. A dynamic mix of film enthusiasts, industry veterans, and cultural influencers came together to celebrate the film’s critical acclaim and its remarkable journey to representing India at the 2025 Academy Awards.

“I was on a jury in a script-writing competition in India when I came across this script. I just fell in love with it and knew instantly that this is something that really is pulling me towards it. I also knew that Kiran had been searching for a film to make,” shared Aamir Khan.

Kiran Rao, who described herself as a “lost lady herself” before this script came about, has been championing her film through a series of special in-person screenings, collaborating with film networks such as Women in Film & TV and Reclaim The Frame. These partnerships highlight the film’s resonant themes and its commitment to sparking global conversations.

During a post-screening Q&A at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) HQ in London, Rao took the audience behind-the-scenes to share her thought process behind the strong feminist themes that unfolded on screen.

She said: “Rebellion is something we think is the only way to change things, that we all go on some sort of a big rampage. But what I learnt while making this film is that first it’s internalising your own power. It’s about owning it and finding that space for yourself and then naturally assertiveness happens in a way.”

With its powerful narrative and artistic brilliance, ‘Lost Ladies’ continues to captivate audiences worldwide and on Netflix, setting the stage for a promising run for awards season in the new year.
