Global Indians celebrate Indian Independence Day with bike rides, events

Indian in different parts of the world celebrated the country’s 75th Independence Day with a variety of events.

Soham Foundation organised Ride to Freedom@75, a 15-km bicycle ride, flagged off by Lord Rami Ranger for British Indians to ride on as they waved the Indian National Flag along the streets of London.

In Russia, Indian Ambassador Bala Venkatesh Varma extended inaugurated a special photo exhibition to mark Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav.

"What distinguishes India, however, is the character of our nationalists, led by Mahatma Gandhi, was based on the principles of truth and non-violence. He and all other national heroes provide us with an invaluable group, not only liberate the nation but also to rebuild it," he said.

Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin extended his greetings to Indian President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Independence Day, highlighting that further enhancement of Russian-Indian ties was in the interests of both parties nations.

US president Joe Biden issued a statement congratulating India: "Over the years, the ties between our people, including a vibrant community of more than four million Indian-Americans, have sustained and strengthened our partnership."

Prime Minister Modi hoisted the tricolour and delivered his customary address to the nation from the ramparts of the Red Fort in New Delhi on August 15. He unveiled a mega $1.35 trillion infrastructure plan with a focus on job creation to move beyond the pandemic-hit economy.

"We are proud that we didn't have to depend on any other country for COVID-19 vaccines. Imagine what would have happened if India didn't have its own vaccine," he said.
