Indian Minister Jaishankar to clinch peacekeeping tech pact with UN

India and the United Nations (UN) have agreed a new pact on a technology partnership in peacekeeping missions.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the partnership on August 18 in the presence of Secretaries-General, Representatives of Members of UN Security Council, Military Attaches & Special Invitees.

Jaishankar, who is in New York to chair high-level events at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) as part of India’s presidency, met Guterres for talks. Taking to Twitter, Jaishankar said the discussions focused on Afghanistan, following the Security Council meeting earlier in the week.

Jaishankar will preside over two high-level meetings on August 18-19. The first event on will be an open debate on 'Protecting the Protectors: Technology and Peacekeeping', while the second event, on August 19, will be a high-level briefing on 'Threats to International Peace and Security caused by Terrorist Acts'.

Both these issues focus on the use of modern technological tools to enhance safety and security, which are priorities for India during its UNSC innings.

During this visit, Jaishankar will also hold bilateral meetings with foreign ministers of other member states on the sidelines of these UNSC events.
