Smoothies can be a great healthy addition when you are on your weight loss journey. However, this is ONLY if they are made with the right ingredients and you have the right portion sizes. If not, your smoothie could end up having more sugar than your desserts!

Here are some things you need to know when making smoothies.

  1. Ingredients: Are you using ingredients that help lose weight or are your ingredients causing your weight gain. Even if it's a healthy ingredient like an avocado or berries, if you combine incorrectly it can cause weight gain

  1. Portion size: Too much of a healthy food may cause weight gain. Even though your smoothies are healthy, if the portions are too large, these can quickly add up in calories and derail your weight loss efforts.

  1. Added sugars: Some smoothie recipes include added sugars, such as honey, agave nectar, fruit juices, etc. as makes them taste better. However, these can make it sweeter than ice cream! You need to learn what the best natural sweeteners are, especially if you are pre-diabetic or diabetic.

Sujata, the best smoothies to have to lose weight or maintain your weight loss need to be low in sugar, high in protein and fibre and contain healthy fats.

The problem is there are so many different recipes and it becomes confusing not knowing which ones are good for you. And even though the store bought smoothies taste delicious, these are often high in sugar and are also expensive.
