Community celebrates veteran British Indian parliamentarian’s 50 years of public service

Virendra Sharma, veteran Labour parliamentarian and recently retired member of Parliament for Ealing Southall in west London marked 50 years of dedicated public service to the borough and his party recently.

The UK government backed event at Heston Hyde Hotel in Hounslow honoured his years of commitment, community service and contributions to British politics.

"It has been the privilege of a lifetime to serve as the Member of Parliament for Ealing Southall. It has been a pleasure to work for and with the many people of Ealing Southall, in Greenford, West Ealing, Hanwell, Northfields and Southall, and I am proud of what we have achieved, the vibrancy of our community and its unity,” said Sharma.

Wes Streeting, the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, was among the ministers who lauded Sharma's unwavering dedication and service. Fellow parliamentarians, MPs, mayors, councillors and a diverse gathering of community members also expressed their admiration for the veteran politician’s many achievements over the years.

Sharma began his political career in the 1970s as a passionate advocate for issues impacting Britain’s South Asian community, particularly within his Ealing Southall constituency. His commitment to social justice, healthcare, and education reform earned him significant recognition over the years.

He said: “As a British Indian and as a Hindu, as a Labour Member, Councillor and MP I have never struggled to reconcile those different, but complimentary, identities. Over nearly 50 years I have served the party in one form or another.”

During the event, speeches highlighted his tireless efforts, emphasising his role in fostering inclusivity and representing the voices of the underrepresented. Streeting praised Sharma's impactful work, acknowledging his contribution towards strengthening community ties and promoting progressive policies.

The event also featured cultural performances, showcasing the rich heritage of the Indian diaspora, alongside reflection upon Sharma's journey in public service. Sharma went on to thank his supporters and constituents for their unwavering trust and encouragement. He expressed his commitment to continuing his service, championing causes that matter to the people of Ealing and beyond.
