Global Indian techies on the march across 2021

Indians all around the world have been excelling in every domain whether it be academic or non-academic. With some of the best technology institutes in the world sculpting our minds, no doubt our special talent lies in software technologies. Indian-origin tech geniuses have been dominating the Silicon Valley for over decades.

The newest and youngest ever entrant to the global technology space is the 37-year-old IIT-Bombay (Indian Institute of Technology) graduate Parag Agrawal, who was announced as the CEO of the social media platform Twitter earlier in November 2021. Prior to Twitter, Agrawal had been working at Yahoo!, Microsoft and AT&T Labs. Born in Rajasthan, he went on to pursue his postgraduate degree in Computer Science from Stanford University.

IIT Kanpur’s Arvind Krishna, appointed CEO of IBM in 2020 hails from Andhra Pradesh. The engineer started at the company’s Thomas J. Watson Research Centre in the year 1990 where he devoted himself for 18 long years before being promoted to higher roles. Krishna received his Doctorate in Electrical Engineering from the University of Illinois.

Nikesh Arora from Ghaziabad, now CEO of Palo Alto Networks since 2018 earned his degree from IIT-Varanasi and moved to the States to pursue his PhD and MBA from the Northeaster University. The 53-year-old held a number of positions - President of Softbank Group and Senior Executive at Google.

Madurai-born Sundar Pichai graduated in Metallurgical Engineering from IIT-Kharagpur and holds a master’s degree from Stanford University in Material Science and Engineering. The 49-year-old had joined Google in 2004 where his efforts in product management and innovation led him to become the CEO of Google and thereafter Alphabet in 2015.

Also in 2015, George Kurian became CEO of NetApp. Partly studying at IIT-Madras, Kurian pursued a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from Princeton University and an MBA from Stanford University. He has previously worked at Oracle, McKinsey & Company and Akamai Technologies.

After graduating with a degree in Electrical Engineering from the Manipal Institute of Technology in India, the Hyderabad born Satya Nadella continued his alma mater at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and University of Chicago. Steering the company from a failing mobile strategy, the 54-year-old is now the CEO of Microsoft since 2014.

London-born Jayshree Ullal heads Artista Network as its CEO since 2008. Prior to this, her career at Cisco spanned for more than 15 years. She is a BSc graduate in Electrical Engineering from the San Francisco State University and holds a master’s degree in Engineering Management from Santa Clara University.

Joining the company in 1998, Hyderabad born Shantanu Narayen became the CEO of Adobe in 2007. Previously a Product Developer at Apple and co-founder of Pictra, a digital photo sharing startup. Narayen was appointed by President Obama to the President’s Management Advisory Board. The 58-year-old holds a master’s degree in Computer Science from Bowling Green State University and an MBA from the University of California.
