India building Large Language Model, ready to share expertise: PM Modi at Paris AI Summit

Addressing the AI Action Summit at the Grand Palais in Paris, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that India is building its own Large Language Model as he called on world leaders to democratise the artificial intelligence (AI) technology by re-skilling people.

PM Modi revealed that the unique public-private partnership model is made available to Indian start-ups at an affordable cost.

"India is building its own Large Language Model considering our diversity. We also have a unique public-private partnership model for pooling resources like compute power. It is made available to our start-ups and researchers at an affordable cost. India is ready to share its experience and expertise to ensure that AI future is for good and for all," the Prime Minister said.

Stressing that India is at the dawn of AI age, PM Modi as co-chair of the summit said that machines can never overpower humans.

"We are at the dawn of the AI age that will shape the course of humanity. Some people worry about machines becoming superior in intelligence to humans. But no one holds the key to our collective future and shared destiny other than us humans. That sense of responsibility must guide us," he said.

The Prime Minister said that India has built digital public infrastructure is open and accessible to all.

"India has successfully built a digital public infrastructure for over 1.4 billion people at a very low cost. it is built around an open and accessible network. It has regulations and a wide range of applications to modernise our economy, reform governance and transform the lives of our people," he said.

PM Modi said that India has harnessed the power of data and it is the foundation of India National AI mission.

"We have unlocked the power of data through our data empowerment and protection architecture, and we have made digital commerce democratic and accessible to all. this vision is the foundation of India National AI mission," he said.

PM Modi said that India leads in AI adoption and techno legal solutions on data privacy.

"During our G20 Presidency, we built a consensus on hearing AI responsibly for good and for all. Today, India leads in AI adoption and techno-legal Solutions on data privacy. we are developing AI applications for public good. we have one of the world's largest AI talent pools. India is ready to share its experience and expertise to ensure that AI future is for good and for all," he said.

The Prime Minister noted the threat of unemployment due to AI and urged that skilling and re-skilling of people is needed to tackle such issues.

"Loss of jobs is AI's most feared disruption, but history has shown that work does not disappear due to technology, only its nature changes. We need to invest in skilling and re-skilling our people for an AI-driven future," PM Modi said.

“We must address concerns related to cyber security, disinformation and deepfakes,” he added.

Moreover, the Prime Minister pitched to ensure access of AI to everyone noting that it can transform millions of lives and improve sectors like health, education and agriculture.

Modi is co-chairing AI Summit in Paris along with French President Emmanuel Macron. PM Modi is on the visit to France till February 12. He will also visit the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) project, a significant international collaboration in nuclear fusion research. In a tribute to historical ties, the Prime Minister will also visit the Mazargues War Cemetery to honour Indian soldiers who sacrificed their lives in the World Wars.
