‘All We Imagine as Light’, a subliminal tale which has caught the imagination of audiences the world over ever since it won the Cannes Film Festival’s coveted Grand Prix, is now also in the running for a BAFTA Award.

Payal Kapadia’s ode to Mumbai will compete in the “Film Not in the English Language” category of the prestigious British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) Awards at the Royal Festival Hall in London on February 16. Its latest nomination this week comes on the heels of a double Golden Globe nomination, injecting a distinctly Indian flavour to the UK awards seen as a precursor to the Hollywood trophy season culminating in the Oscars.

Ramping up that flavour are two London-based filmmakers Sandhya Suri and Karan Kandhari, who will go head-to-head in the ‘Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director of Producer’ category. While Suri is in the race for her police thriller ‘Santosh’ set in India, Kandhari is competing for his dark comedy ‘Sister Midnight’, starring Radhika Apte. Popular British Indian actor-filmmaker Dev Patel is also nominated in the category for his directorial debut ‘Monkey Man’.

Jane Millichip, CEO of BAFTA, said: “The 42 films nominated today span a fantastically broad spectrum of genres with enormous breadth in creative expression; from the most intimate character pieces to epic societal commentaries via genre-bending dramas, musicals and comedies.

“I’m delighted that 14 of the 24 nominees in the performance categories are receiving their first BAFTA film nomination and that 12 of the nominated films are directed by women. Our BAFTA voting members now have the unenviable task of selecting the winners which will be celebrated at the 2025 EE BAFTA Film Awards on 16 February.”
