The University of Strathclyde Students’ Union recently played host to the Indian National Student Association (INSA) Scotland Welcome Reception for Indian students. The gathering brought together students, young professionals, and prominent figures from the Indian and Scottish communities, making it an unforgettable evening of inspiration, camaraderie, and insightful notes. Here the co-host shares some insights as she reflects upon INSA as a community that makes a difference together as a solid, steady support system.

The evening started with an opening address by INSA Scotland’s President, Puneet Dwivedi MBE, whose words set the tone for INSA’s mission and unwavering commitment to empowering Indian students: “INSA is here for all of you, new and returning students. Our mission is to support you and your well-being. We aim to support you through your ups and downs in your academic journey and make sure you don’t miss your home. Hence our tagline: home away from home.”

Professor Stephen McArthur, a distinguished member of the academic community, and a valued ally of the Indian student community, shared his admiration for the Indian student body. “Our Indian student community is vital to us. They bring a diverse set of viewpoints, a diverse set of skills and real talent into the city. We are trying to create the right environment so students can thrive in Scotland, and learn the skills they want and that’s why we are delighted to be part of this Welcome Reception by INSA.”

The event’s spotlight shone brightly on the Consul General of India, Mr Siddharth Malik, who delivered a keynote speech that resonated deeply with the attendees: “Come with an open mind, not a closed one. Adjust to the local to the local environment as much as you can. There are a lot of opportunities, along with many challenges and it’s important to navigate them with resilience and openness.”

A fireside chat featured distinguished guests Professor Sreevas Sahasranamam and Dr Poonam Malik who shared their journeys through academia and entrepreneurship, offering invaluable insights into the intersection of these worlds. Dr Malik said: “Scottish Enterprise, Barclays Eagle Labs, and business gateways are incredible tools for exploration and development. Prof. Sahasranamam added practical advice for students eager to connect their studies with real-world applications: “Commercialisation out of universities is incredibly common. Engaging with these pathways gives you an insight into cutting-edge technologies and aligns your goals with the latest advancements in your field.”

The interactive format kept the energy high, allowing students to envision ways they could infuse entrepreneurial principles into their own academic and career paths. To further bridge the gap between aspiration and achievement, a Young Professionals Panel showcased three recent graduates now working at JP Morgan, Three UK, and North Lanarkshire Council.

The INSA Scotland Welcome Event embodied the organisation’s mission to provide a supportive, resource-rich environment for Indian students in Scotland. By blending inspiring stories, practical advice, and community building, the event has set a high bar for future gatherings. As India continues to be a vital part of the international student community in the UK, this event will serve as a welcoming occasion for students transitioning into the Scottish academic environment.

“This is very beneficial for the new beginners who are going to join the UK universities. It is a very good way to get ready for the upcoming challenges of living in the UK,” noted Gaurav, a recent graduate in attendance.
