Oldham’s iconic Hindu temple is leading the charge in environmental sustainability by aiming to completely eliminate the use of plastics on its premises.

In a significant step towards a greener future, the Shree Swaminarayan Mandir has replaced plastic utensils with reusable metal plates for its large-scale thali events and temple Mahaprasad, which cater to hundreds of attendees, as well as offering recyclable plates and cups and spoons for external hall bookings. The temple said the move not only highlights its dedication to environmental preservation but also sets a benchmark for the community.

Temple Secretary Vinod Vekaria shared : "We recognise our duty to protect the environment. Switching to metal plates that we can wash, and reuse is just one step in our journey towards sustainability."

The initiative to increase reliance on sustainable practices is evident in several other aspects of the temple’s operations, including the recent installation of 90 solar panels. Demonstrating a comprehensive commitment to being eco-friendly, the temple is committed to reducing its carbon footprint and reliance on non-renewable energy sources. The shift towards solar power aligns with its broader vision of sustainability and environmental responsibility, which it aims to extend beyond just energy and waste management.

There have also been other eco-friendly measures implemented within the temple grounds, and a focus on green landscaping and growing of their own fruit and vegetables on site. The move is not just about reducing costs for a facility, but also about fostering a community culture that values and practices environmental responsibility.

Treasurer Jit Kara added: "When energy bills were on the rise, we looked at a number of options and felt installing further panels would be beneficial. With the installation of solar panels, we've seen a considerable reduction in these costs, providing us financial relief amidst the rising cost of living. As we continue to innovate and implement green practices, the site can serve as an inspiration for other organisations and communities to follow suit.
