The diaspora enthusiasm around the 75th anniversary of Indian Independence this week will spill into the weekend, with a special community event in west London on August 21.
The Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav (AKAM) celebration at the Navnat Centre in Hayes is being organised with the support of the Indian High Commission in London. Dubbed an “open event” for the Indian diaspora, non-resident Indians (NRIs) and friends of India, the celebration will begin with a tricolour flag-hoisting ceremony and singing of the national anthem.
A variety of cultural programmes and free food stalls, offering a diverse range of cuisine from different regions of India will make up the day-long festivities.

A shuttle bus service has also been laid out for those arriving by public transport to the Hillingdon station.
AKAM is an initiative of the government of India to celebrate and commemorate 75 years of independence and the glorious history of its people, culture and achievements. This Mahotsav is dedicated to the people of India who have not only been instrumental in bringing India thus far in its evolutionary journey but also hold within them the power and potential to enable Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of activating India 2.0, fuelled by the spirit of Aatmanirbhar Bharat or self-reliant India.
The official journey of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav commenced on 12 March 2021, which started a 75-week countdown to India’s 75th anniversary of independence and will conclude on 15 August 2023.
