Film Review: Freddy

Starring: Kartik Aaryan, Alaya F, Karan Pandit, Sajjad Delafrooz, Myrna S. Dalal

Director: Shashanka Ghosh

A story that starts off mellow and sweet, moves to touching, to shocking – a thriller which delivers because you can never anticipate what’s around the corner.

A socially awkward dentist, Freddy Ginwala (Aaryan), finds it hard to navigate the dating landscape. After his search for a ‘soul mate’ is met with a string of rejections, Freddy’s loneliness makes him a loveable protagonist with a relatable side. So, when you see him falling for Kainaaz (Alaya), a patient who visits him for a root canal treatment, you tend to share his eagerness for things to work out; the only problem being, of course, that Kainaaz is married.

Director Shashanka Ghosh, who has successful films like ‘Khubsoorat’ and ‘Veere Di Wedding’ under his belt, carves out a romantic thriller which takes the viewers through many twists and turns – some darker than others – but never loses that understated touch, which somehow makes the element of surprise even more effective.

Ambition, love, betrayal and revenge – the film offers everything a good romantic thriller should. Set against the backdrop of Mumbai the 2-hour film also has good cinematography and a music score that fits well into the overall vibe.

Aaryan’s portrayal of the shy, introverted dentist brings out the many nuances of the character and deserves much acclaim. Alaya F’s character captures the heart of Freddy and the audience alike! Alaya, who won the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut, is superb in her portrayal of the elegant but reserved Kainaaz. The film rests mainly with the two leads but the supporting cast cannot be left out in fleshing out good characters despite limited scope, especially Karan Pandit who plays Raymond aptly.
