Shivani Raja, the Conservative Party member of Parliament for Leicester East, joined competing teams at the first-ever UK Kho Premier League tournament in the city recently, endorsing its vision of celebrating the growth of the traditional Indian sport that has now evolved into a competitive league format in Britain.
The Kho Premier League has held its inaugural set of matches across the country covering London, Leicester and Manchester with three men’s leagues consisting of four teams each and a women’s league of seven teams, totalling 19 teams in its first season.
Raja said: “Seeing how people, regardless of gender or age, are able to get involved in sharing a passion for a sport rooted in such rich cultural heritage at a professional level is fantastic and highlights the hard work and dedication of those working to bring Kho to the forefront here in the UK.
“To have the first-ever UK tournament here in Leicester is a testament to the dynamic and inclusive nature of our local community, and I look forward to seeing the sport continue to thrive in the UK and beyond.”
The organisers said the support of the British Indian MP highlights the significance of preserving cultural heritage while promoting inclusivity and athletic excellence. The Kho Premier League is a testament to how traditional sports can thrive on an international stage, bringing communities together and inspiring the next generation of athletes.
Having played Kho in her youth, Raja expressed a deep sense of nostalgia seeing the sport thrive at such a competitive level. She shared her excitement at witnessing so many passionate participants keeping the sport alive, particularly the rapid growth of the women’s league, which is providing more opportunities for female athletes to compete and excel.
The league organisers said they plan to expand the Dynamis MedTech Kho Premier League’s reach, ensuring that Kho Kho continues to grow as a recognised and respected sport in the UK.
