Labour has long, strong relationship with India: Sir Keir Starmer to open UK-India Week 2023

The Leader of the Opposition, Sir Keir Starmer, will be opening the fifth annual India Global Forum (IGF) UK-India Week 2023 (June 26-30) in London and his message is clearly tailored to invigorate the Labour Party’s ties with India and Indian diaspora.

Sir Keir said: “I am looking forward to speaking at India Global Forum. The Labour Party has a long and strong relationship with India which I am very proud of.

“The time has now come to look to the future and work on how we can deepen and widen our cooperation in critical areas such as trade and investment, technology and innovation, climate action, diversity and inclusion, and healthcare, the future of work, skills and education – all areas where I see huge scope for mutual benefit.”

IGF’s UK-India Week is a five-day series of exclusive events that brings together business leaders, policymakers, and thought leaders from the UK, India and around the world to explore opportunities for further collaboration and growth. Sir Keir Starmer's opening address will be the first comprehensive insight into the Labour leader’s vision for the UK-India relationship, its wider geo-political importance, and how the Opposition party will seek to engage with the world’s largest democracy and fastest growing economy.

IGF Founder and Chairman Professor Manoj Ladwa said: “I believe it’s timely that Sir Keir will be opening UK-India Week this year. We are at a critical juncture, and so his participation underscores the importance of the need for a bipartisan approach to the relationship with India.

“Given the ups and downs in Labour’s ties with India in recent years, I am sure his intervention at India Global Forum will be eagerly awaited, and in my view, much needed.”
