UK-based diaspora invited to the heart of India for experience of a lifetime

The preparations for the biennial Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) are in full swing, with India keen for as many members of the estimated 1.7 million UK-based Indian diaspora to be involved in the grand celebrations in January 2023. The 17th edition of this engagement effort with overseas Indians is being held in central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh – dubbed the heart of India.

“The PBD is the largest gathering of Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) worldwide, which takes place in this coming year in Indore – a unique city with the title of the cleanest city in India for six consecutive years,” said Vikram Doraiswami, Indian High Commissioner to the UK.

“This time to make the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas a more special experience for you, we’re also working to offer you gratis visas and also to provide special facilitation,” he said.

The theme of the 2023 PBD is ‘Diaspora: Reliable Partners for India's Progress in Amrit Kaal’ and, as Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi famously said, the UK-India diaspora living bridge is a key aspect of this reliable partnership.

Premier platform

Amish Tripathi, renowned author and Director of the Nehru Centre in London, believes the event will be an experience of a lifetime for non-resident Indians (NRIs) and PIOs, who will get a chance to directly hear from and engage with the President of India, Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, External Affairs Minister Dr S. Jaishankar and Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh, among a host of other senior Indian dignitaries.

Tripathi said: “The Pravasi Bharatiya Divas is the premier platform for the overseas Indian community of NRIs and PIOs to connect with each other, and indeed with India.

“This time, the PBD is being held in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. The delegates will get an opportunity to travel through and experience the tourist treasures of Madhya Pradesh, the Heart of India... Book your seat! It will be the experience of a lifetime!”
