In a wide-ranging discussion on the countless delights in store for any traveller to India – first-time or well-heeled – the High Commission of India in London recently hosted an insightful ‘How to fall in love with India’ tourism session.

Travel expert and TransIndus Managing Director Amrit Singh was in conversation with ‘Wanderlust Magazine’ Editor-in-Chief George Kipouros as they recounted the countless charms of visits to a country they both love as a top tourist destination of the world.

The High Commissioner of India to the UK, Vikram Doraiswami, set the scene for the duo’s colourful presentation which began with the capital of India and covered the iconic Taj Mahal before traversing many familiar and not-so-familiar tourism delights.

Doraiswami said: “No other country is a world in itself like India is. By that I don't just mean the sheer size of it – 1.4 billion people is a lot of people – but the sheer diversity of it.

“No other nation has more languages, more ethnicities, more diversity to showcase in every sense of the term; in terms of the number of cooking media that you might use, in terms of staple grains, in terms of what we define as edible roots to shoots, from plants to animal life… everything in India is enormously diverse.”

He quoted actress Erin Reese to highlight how “there are three trips you take to India – the one you think you’re going to have that you plan for, the one you actually have, and the one you live through once you go back home” as he stressed the importance of tourism as a means of promoting understanding between people.

Kipouros, who said his travel magazine has featured India and its many iconic landmarks the most on its covers over the years, began by sharing memories of the sheer awe and delight from his very first trip to India which began with Delhi.

“We believe in making travel accessible to all and India is by far the most affordable luxury destination in the world,” he said.
