For the past two decades, Shree Radha Krishna Mandir in Manchester has upheld a cherished tradition of hosting a 1st January Havan [Hindu fire purifying ritual]. This annual ritual offers the congregation an opportunity to begin the year in accordance with Hindu traditions, seeking blessings from the Almighty. The havan is regarded as a sacred moment to ask for forgiveness for past wrongdoings and to pray for strength to uphold Dharma [righteousness] and act righteously.

According to temple trustee Namratta Bedi, "The havan allows us to beseech divine guidance and start the year on the right path. It’s a time to reflect and renew our commitment to doing right by others."

Each year, two havan kunds are set up to accommodate the devotees. The rituals are led by the Mandir’s priest, who also delivers a spiritually enriching sermon. The atmosphere is filled with bhajans and kirtans [devotional singing] performed by devotees, enhancing the sense of devotion and unity. The event concludes with the priest performing the Aarti [ritual singing], followed by the distribution of prasad.

This year, the prasad [food offering] was sponsored by Mr and Mrs Pradeep Gupta, Mr and Mrs Vijay Gupta, and their families. The annual Hindu calendar was sponsored by Mr and Mrs P.L. Seth, Mr and Mrs Sanjay Seth, and Mr and Mrs Vishal Seth, along with their families. Speaking about the sponsorships, an attendee remarked, "It is heartening to see members of the community coming forward to support such important traditions."

The New Year Havan is more than a spiritual gathering; it is a vital community event. It provides an opportunity to reconnect with friends, extended family, and even make new acquaintances. For families new to the city, the event serves as a welcoming platform to integrate into the community.

"This event is about more than prayer," shared Bedi. "It’s about bringing people together and fostering a sense of belonging."

This year’s havan was particularly special, as it marked a significant milestone for the Mandir. The management announced the opportunity to purchase the current premises from the landlords, a development that has inspired hope and excitement among devotees.

"For those unaware, the Mandir has been operating from rented premises," Bedi explained. "This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and we will need the community’s support to make it a reality. More details will be shared soon."
