Sujoy Gupta, Executive Chef at Taj St. James’ Court & Taj 51 Buckingham Gate, is the man overseeing the culinary excellence that is associated with the iconic Indian hotel in London.
Just as the Taj Hotel in London was spruced up with its sparkling décor for the Christmas season, iGlobal caught up with Chef Sujoy to take a behind-the-scenes peek at his kitchen where all the magic happens.
“I have been working with Taj London for the last three years but with the company for the last 20 years,” says Chef Sujoy, taking a little trip down memory lane.
As someone who got drawn to the hospitality industry in the late 1990s, the accomplished chef from Kolkata overcame family apprehensions over his choice of profession to hit many highs on his journey with flavours and painstaking curations.
“Curation is not a day or month effort. What we do as a culinary team involves a homework of around seven to eight months behind every concept that we roll out here at Taj London,” he explains.

While visibly one of those extremely cool-headed chefs, unlike the hot-headed ones such as Gordon Ramsay known for his ‘Kitchen Nightmares’ television show, Chef Sujoy admits to losing his calm every now and then.
“The only thing that makes me feel somewhat dissatisfied is when we get a negative feedback due to what is an obvious lack of attention on the part of my own team,” he shares with a smile, when asked about his “Gordon Ramsay moments” in the hustle and bustle of his kitchen.
He and his team are currently juggling one of their busiest periods of the year, with the Taj in London running a special Winter Wonders theme for the holiday season. From bespoke menu offerings over the Christmas and New Year period to beautifully crafted pastries, there promises to be something for everyone at one of the most popular hangouts in the heart of London.
