Onam festivities herald joyous festive season for British Indians

With Onam and Raksha Bandhan upon us and Krishna Janmashtami and Ganesh Chaturthi coming soon after, one of the most festive periods in the Hindu calendar is here!

The next few weeks and months certainly promise to bring the best and brightest of diaspora festivities, vibrant celebrations and exuberant events the world over, including the UK.

The first to greet us is the harvest festival of Onam. Originating from the South Indian state of Kerala, Onam is celebrated for ten days with much fervour. It is believed that King Mahabali – a beloved demon King who once ruled Kerala – was pushed to the netherworlds by Lord Vishnu during his Vaman avatar. After seeing the King’s love for his people, however, Lord Vishnu allows him to visit his state once every year – during Onam.
