British Indian Yoga prodigy is UK’s new European Champion

Ishwar Sharma was just three years old when he took to Yoga and has since collected a mountain of medals and awards.

Recently, he added another Gold Medal to his tally at the European Yoga Sports Championship in Sweden. He lifted the Europe Cup 2023 in the Boys 12-14 category when he competed in the European competition organised by the International Yoga Sports Federation in collaboration with Swedish Yoga Sports Federation in the city of Malmo.

“Ishwar is passionate about spreading the message of Yoga especially for special needs children,” his family said in a statement.

Sharma’s autism and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) strengthened his resolve to help other kids, including those with special needs, to benefit from daily Yoga in their lives.

In recognition of leading daily Yoga classes for 40 children across 14 countries during the Covid lockdown, former British prime minister Boris Johnson honoured Ishwar the Points of Light award in June 2021.

In a personal letter he said: "You have brought the joy of Yoga to hundreds of children globally during lockdown. I was particularly inspired to hear how you have helped children with special needs enjoy the activity you enjoy and excel at."

Ishwar has won five world championships and British Citizen Youth Award at the House of Lords for his contribution towards Yoga, among several other recognitions. He took up Yoga after being inspired by his father, Dr Vishwanath, and is now committed to expounding the many virtues of the ancient Indian practice in Britain.

Some of his achievements over the years include:

  • 3 time UK under 11 yoga champion

  • 5-time World Champion

  • British Indian of the Year 2018

  • British citizen youth award BCYA

  • Global child prodigy award 2020

  • PM Narendra Modiji My life My Yoga Virtual Yoga contest winner
