British Indian and Labour Party values are inextricably linked

As the July 4 General Election approaches, candidates across the UK are outlining their priorities and addressing the concerns of their constituents.

In this iGlobal exclusive interview, the Labour Party candidate for Harrow East, Primesh Patel, shares his vision for the future, and highlights key issues such as rebuilding the NHS, tackling crime, and creating jobs through GB Energy. Patel wants to present a mission-driven approach under the leadership of Sir Keir Starmer.

Q

What are your top priorities for the election campaign?

A

Under the leadership of Keir Starmer, a changed Labour Party stands ready to govern. The next Labour government will be mission led, focused on the issues that really matter to the British people. Rebuilding our NHS, tackling crime and its causes, switching on GB energy to create jobs and lower energy bills; these are the policies that will get Britain’s future back.

Q

What are the concerns highlighted by the electorate of your constituency?

A

It is no secret that the people of this country are desperate for change. Ask almost anyone if they are better off after 14 years of this Tory government, and you will likely hear a resounding no. This is no surprise, 14 years of Conservative rule has resulted in utter failure; an NHS on its knees, a cost-of-living crisis, rising mortgages, crumbling high streets, rising taxes, the list goes on and on. And just like all across Britain, the people of my home Harrow East have been asked to pick up the tab for these failures.

Q

Is the Labour Party fully aligned with British Indian aspirations?

A

Absolutely. A renewed Labour Party under Keir Starmer is the only party that supports aspiration, getting on in life and rewarding hard work. It fills me with joy that the Labour Party has selected a record number of Indian origin candidates to stand as parliamentary candidates, more than any other party. I’m proud to be one of these individuals. Britain’s relationship with India is critical, and on their recent visit to India, David Lammy and Jonathan Reynolds expressed their desire for a new strategic partnership between India and the UK under a Labour government, and Keir Starmer himself has talked about wanting a respectful, forward looking, and aspirational relationship with India. I hope to be a part of this new and exciting period in the India-UK relationship under a Labour government.

Q

What is your motivation behind contesting as a Labour MP?

A

The next General Election won’t just be about who will be Prime Minister. The residents of Harrow East don’t just need a Labour Government nationally, but a Labour MP locally, one who understands and is willing to fight for their community.

Harrow East is where I live, where I work, it's where I call home. I will never stop fighting for this community or its residents, and that's why I am running to be its Labour MP.

Q

How does your Indian heritage inspire you on your journey?

A

I am a proud British Indian Hindu. My ancestors hail from Navsari in Gujarat. My family were part of the large entrepreneurial Indian community of East Africa that prospered and worked hard to make a success of their lives. Following increasing anti-Indian sentiment, my family made the difficult decision to come to the UK working hard to rebuild their lives, ensuring I had a home filled with love and opportunity. Faced with racism and discrimination in the 1970s, my parents were strong supporters of the Labour Party, and it is from them that I understood that only the Labour Party stands firm for a better society. British Indian and Labour Party values are inextricably linked and as a British Indian, I am proud to represent the Labour Party.

Q

Finally, your message to voters…

A

It’s time for change. The people of Harrow East deserve so much better than a failed Tory government. If elected, I pledge to be a committed, and truly local, MP. I will help make our streets safer, combat the cost-of-living crisis, work to regenerate our high streets, and help to rebuild our local NHS. I will always put my community and its residents first, and will work tirelessly on their behalf to deliver a safer, more prosperous Harrow, that we can all be proud to call home. This is the future I want to deliver for our community. Through its diversity and its spirit, Harrow East represents so much that is special about this country and this city. But like so many places across Britain, it is crying out for change. In this next general election, you will have the power to bring change to Harrow and to this country, and I hope you will join me in getting Britain’s future back.
