Spring style guide: How to look chic without freezing

Spring style guide: How to look chic without freezing
Published on

Ah, springtime in the UK! That magical season when the daffodils bloom, the sun peeks out, and we all naively think, “Finally! It’s time to ditch the winter coats!” Only to step outside and be smacked in the face by a gust of wind colder than our auntie’s disapproving stare when we refused a second helping of dhal.

Yes, ladies, we’ve all been there.

The eternal struggle of wanting to channel ‘effortlessly chic’ but ending up looking like the Michelin Man waddling down the high street — brrr! So, how do we nail spring dressing without freezing or looking overdressed? Fear not, my stylish warriors — I have the perfect hacks to keep you looking fabulous and feeling toasty.

1. Thermal Layers: Your Secret Weapon

The ultimate cold-weather hack: thermal inners! Think of them as your invisible heating system. Brands such as Uniqlo’s HeatTech and Marks & Spencer’s thermal tops are my favourites—invest in these miracle workers. You’ll be warm, and no one will know that under your cute blouse, you’re basically swaddled in a heat-trapping cocoon. Alternatively, you can wear a 100% cotton top which, though not as warm, does provide and extra layer and is breathable.

2. The Art of Layering

Mastering layering is all about the right mix. Start with a breathable base (see above: thermal magic or a cotton shirt), add a stylish, lightweight wool or cashmere knit, and finish with a chic coat or blazer. If it’s a particularly cold spring day, throw on a coat. The trick is to have removable layers because you must be prepared for fluctuating indoor heating as well as unpredictable outdoor temperatures.

3. Warmth-Giving Fabrics: Wool, Mohair, Cashmere – Oh My!

Not all fabrics are created equal. Wool and leather are your best friends. Swap out chunky jumpers for slim woollen ones. Chunky jumpers are often made with thick, bulky yarn, featuring textured patterns that add visual weight as well as  warmth — ideal for winter, but less so for spring. Instead, opt for thinner wool yarn, fibre blends, and finer stitch patterns that offer a luxurious and lightweight feel.

Understanding Wool

Wool is derived from animal hair and is known for its durability, breathability, moisture-wicking, and insulating properties. Different types of wool serve different needs:

  • Merino wool (from Merino sheep) is one of the finest and most common wool types, offering softness and warmth without bulk.

  • Cashmere (from Cashmere goats) is one of the most luxurious and expensive wool types, known for its exceptional softness.

  • Angora wool (from Angora rabbits) is incredibly fine, soft, and silky, with a light halo effect.

  • Mohair wool (from Angora goats) is strong, silky, and soft, providing warmth with a lightweight feel.

Fine wool is used in garments such as sweaters, suits, trousers, hats, gloves, and coats—all of which can be stylishly incorporated into your spring wardrobe.

Pro-tip: Not all 100% wool coats are created equal. The warmth and weight depend on the type of wool, weave density, and fabric thickness. For spring, I prefer coats made from fine wool with a medium to light thickness and weight. Wool blends with cashmere or alpaca add warmth and softness while reducing bulk, making them an ideal choice for this transitional season.

Leather: A Chic and Functional Choice

Leather is a natural fabric known for its durability, water resistance, and luxurious feel. While leather can be uncomfortable when worn directly against the skin, it is excellent for outerwear, such as jackets and coats. High-quality leather garments should be lined for insulation, comfort, and durability. Leather boots and shoes are also fantastic for warmth and longevity, making them a worthwhile investment.

Sustainable Choices:

  • Wool certifications include the Responsible Wool Standard (RWS), Woolmark, and the International Wool Textile Organisation (IWTO), ensuring humane and sustainable production.

  • Leather certifications such as the OEKO-TEX Leather Standard ensure products are free from harmful substances and meet safety requirements.

4. Coat Game Strong: Choose Your Length Wisely

A coat that hits at the right length is key. Too short, and your legs turn into popsicles. Too long, and you may as well be wrapped in a blanket. The secret? Having a variety of coats in different fabrics and lengths:

  • Long wool coats are perfect for early spring and late autumn — warm yet visually light.

  • Classic trench coats (ideally made from gabardine, a tightly woven cotton twill) are naturally water-resistant and great for transitional weather. Look for cotton, wool, or silk linings for added comfort and warmth.

  • Cropped trench jackets are having a moment this spring—check out Marks & Spencer and & Other Stories for stylish options.

  • Cropped wool jackets in a neutral or vibrant colour are great for versatile styling.

These options will keep you warm while ensuring you still look effortlessly stylish on your springtime walks (or chilly commutes, realistically speaking).

5. Scarves & Gloves: Your Chic Armor

A scarf isn’t just a cute accessory — it’s a necessity! This spring, silk and satin scarves are the ultimate statement piece. They add a touch of colour, texture, and warmth to any outfit. Whether sheer for sophistication or draped effortlessly around your neck or head, scarves will be a major trend. Preppy headscarves, waist-wrapped styles, and elegant shoulder drapes are all making a comeback.

Pro-tip: ensure that your scarves worn around your face are in your colour palette for maximum impact!

And let’s not forget gloves. Cold hands are a tragedy, and touchscreen-friendly gloves exist, so no excuses!

6. Accept the Inevitable: It’s Still Bloody Cold!

No matter how many layers you wear, British spring will still find a way to betray you. The key is to own it. Strut confidently in your stylish layers, embrace the wind-blown hair look, and pretend it was intentional.

So, my stylish queens, go forth and embrace spring — strategically, stylishly, and most importantly, warmly! And remember, if all else fails, there’s always a steaming cup of tea to warm the soul.
